I want to do direct deposit but...?

I get paid bi-weekly, and I wanted to do direct deposit. My boss told me that when I sign up, they have to run one check through to make sure it's set up right and I won't get it until the next pay period. Does that mean I'd have to go a month without a check, because I can't afford to do that right now. Her instructions are unclear and I don't know if I want to go through with it.
