Is this allowed in the workplace?

  • sell music
  • device manager
  • credit cards for fair credit
Ok, so I work in a shop (no names for obvious reasons) and at the start of the year my employer said that every 2 weeks we have to push to sell a certain product which is placed at the till at the start of the 2 weeks.

Personally I don't agree with asking customers if they want to buy things, if they did they would pick them up themselves.

So I said to my boss, what if I don't ask every customer if they want to buy a bar of chocolate or bottle of coke? and she said 'well then we'll get rid of you'.

I'm sure to god they can't do that so I called ACAS and they said if it is nowhere in your contract and they get fire you then you can take them to tribunal. They also said that if they write up a new contract with the new rules in it and you refuse to sign it and they fire you, then you can still take them to an employment tribunal.

I have read through my contract and can't see it (think it's called 'up-selling') anywhere. However I don't want to keep refusing to do it and find out that it is in my contract and I get fired anyway.

Anyone good with employment law got any suggestions?

Thanks.
