Phone calls to wrong number-- how can I stop them?

Lately there have many phone calls to my land line with someone with my last name, and a first name similar to mine. I assume they are from bill collectors. We cannot change this number, we need it since so many people have our current number. My last name is quite common in this area.


Although most people are polite and do not call back, some people become persistent and call back 3 or 4 times or so, until they understand there is no one here by the name they are looking for. One lady was quite nasty on the phone but has not called back.


Is there anything I can do about this annoyance? I do not want to start writing letters to people to try to get these calls stopped if I can. Or are we simply stuck with this? We do not want to unlist our telephone number.
