I went through this not too long ago. You will need to settle all expenses that are not covered.


If her estate is over the medicaid limit, they may keep the difference. If she was able to qualify for medicaid, she may not have anything of significant value. It would be easier to ask the medicaid representative from your state.


You will need to also consider final expenses. The check from social security is only about $800-$900 (est). The typical basic funeral expenses are $5K and up for the regular burial and about $3K for cremation.


You will need to compensate for services through the church, funeral home and other costs. It is best to pre-plan final expenses. Talk to funeral directors, your church, etc.
